Since 2009 we offer a finance symposium for Romania – modelled on the well tried-and-tested Alpbach Finanzsymposium. This event offers Romanian banks and financial service providers a unique platform to present their innovative products and services to customers.

Once a year, the symposium comprehensively deals with a current topic – in plenary discussions, executive discussions and expert seminars. The goal of the event is for every participant to go away with at least one concrete idea that he or she can put into practice in their company afterwards.

Review 2010: Managing and Hedging Balance Sheet Risks

Maintaining control and transparency over balance sheet risk is crucial to an enterprise´s relationship with its investors.

In the 2009 Romanian Finance Symposium the focus was on liquidity risk and cash management. In the meantime many companies improved their liquidity and general management systems. Still, we think that being fully aware of the short-term liquidity position and the liquidity buffers available is a crucial issue in order to avoid major possible threats to an enterprise's life.

Furthermore, everybody may agree that collection is the current top issue in credit risk management. But collection is part of an overall credit risk management process – it is the CFO´s responsibility to install this vital business process and to insure high quality levels in management. Finally, market risk is a most evident balance sheet risk – especially to Romanian enterprises. The identification of FX, interest and commodity risk and subsequently applying proper hedging instruments can only work if it is embedded into proper business processes including operations and accounting – to achieve a „no nasty surprises“ result by year-end.
